You’ve gotten in and now you’re waiting to start your very first day. What should you do to prepare? I get asked this question on a daily basis, and my answer is the same no matter what school you’re going to.
Have fun. Spend time with your family. Relax.
PA school is crazy and time consuming, and no matter what you do to prepare it’s going to be like this. Additionally, it’s going to be nothing like anything you’ve ever experienced before and the ways you studied before are not going to be the ways you study now. You’re not going to have a good grasp of the material that the school wants you to know and is going to test you on. Spending time learning all sorts of random material that you may (probably will) never be tested on is a waste of your time.
With that note, once you enter school, most of your time is either going to be spent in class or studying. Finding time to do “fun stuff” or spend time with your friends and family is going to be difficult. And in all honesty, at some point during PA school (or med school or nursing school), you’re going to feel burnt out. Because of this, my recommendation is to take your break for school to enjoy yourself . Spend time with your loved ones, go on that adventure you’ve always wanted to, read a book you never have had time for before. If you’re working, quit your job a few weeks before you enter school that you have time to do this (do NOT work during school).
So, let’s say you absolutely can’t resist studying something. My sugggestion would be to study either anatomy or medical terminology. Both of these are pretty standard across the board and will help you during the rest of your studying during the years. Even if you’re planning on doing this, I would still make sure to take the time for yourself to relax and spend time with your loved ones.
Personally, I went on a trip to Great Britain and Scotland with my family. It was a ton of fun and gave me an opportunity to just focus on myself before school. I had exactly a month off between quitting my job/graduating and starting school, and if I could go back and do it again, I would take more time off!
