As a new grad with quite a bit of loans to pay off, I’m currently ballin’ on a tight budget. But that doesn’t mean the I can’t enjoy a good sale! My mom and I are religious about shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and have been for a few years now. We get some classic staples every year, along with some “fun” items.
With any sale, I think its incredibly important to remember that you should only get things you actually need, or at least items that you would buy even if they weren’t on sale. I know how easy it can be to get caught up in all the excitement of a sale and then suddenly you ended up spending a lot more money than you needed (or wanted) to. Especially with a sale like this were high priced items suddenly become so much cheaper.
So I wanted to share with you guys some of the classic things that we tend to buy, and a few of the items I’m considering splurging on this year. I definitely did NOT buy everything that I’m sharing with you guys – these are just the items that I strongly considered buying (or items I already have and love). And when I do get my items in the mail #onlineshoppingproblems, I’ll be sure to share my thoughts with you guys.
One of the things I’m struggling with for the sale this year is my weight. PA school was a huge source of stress for me and probably the most unhealthy time period of my life. I went from someone who worked out and ate healthy(ish) to a person who stress ate and barely felt like she had the time to sleep, much less work out. Ironically, this was also a time period when I learned the most about how to be healthy and how to counsel someone on how to integrate those qualities into their own life. Needless to say, now that school is over and my life has become less chaotic, I’m feeling really uncomfortable in my own skin. So a huge goal for me is to get back to being healthy and feeling confident by the end of the year (especially because I also have a bridesmaid dress I need to fit in to). This definitely affected some of the things that I chose to buy this year in the sale, and I did buy some items in a smaller size. Yes I know this is a no-no, but Nordstrom has such a great return policy that if I do end up not feeling comfortable in them by the end of the year (December is my absolutely must), then I’ll just return them. Why am I telling you guys this? Because I’ve made it my goal with this blog to be as honest as possible.
*heads up, if you do click on one of these links and buy something, I do get a tiny monetary kickback*
Caslon Rounded V-Neck Tee – I’m always on the look for a classic tee; they’re easy to dress up or dress down and are prefect in the insane heat of Florida summers. I got the black-white strip, navy-white strip, and then a black one. I typically wear a small or a medium, and I ended up getting a small in these shirts since most reviews say that they run a little looser.
Halogen Boat Neck Cotton Top – I saw this shirt online and absolutely fell in love with the stripped version. I feel like its J. Crew style (without J. Crew price). There is no reviews on it yet, so I bought both the small and medium to compare. I’m also very curious to see what the fabric feels like. Part of what I hate about some shirts is how thick/rough they are. I overheat very quickly and cannot handle feeling itchy, so I’m really hoping that this shirt is light.
BP. Twist Front Sweater – Living in DC for two years really made me fall in love with sweaters. Actually experiencing fall and spring made me realize how nice it is to have items that are light but thick enough to keep me warm. I really like how this sweater has a little style to it and doesn’t just look oversized. I ended up not getting it because Florida only has one temperature – hot – and I didn’t feel like I would get enough use out of it.
Halogen Halogen Scallop Edge Sweater – Another item that I feel looks very preppy and classic. I love the scalloping detail on the neckline and bottom, and that the sleeves are only 3/4 length (perfect for layering under jackets or Florida “winters”). I ended up not getting this sweater because they didn’t have my size, but I’ve been religiously checking back to see if it gets restocked.
Julia Jordan Tie-Neck Halter Jumpsuit, Eliza J Flutter Sleeve Crepe Jumpsuit, Tahari Sleeveless Crepe Crop Jumpsuit, and Leith Surplice Jumpsuit – I bought all four of these jumpsuits. Am I going to keep all four? Absolutely not! I’ll probably keep at most two (or most likely end up returning all four). I love the jumpsuit trend that’s big right now, but I have a very hard time finding ones that fit me properly. I’m taller than average (5’9″) and most of my height is in my torso, so it can be hard to find a jumpsuit that is long enough for me and doesn’t give me camel toe. I thought that all of these jumpsuits where in style without being too crazy and still holding true to my mainly preppy wardrobe.
Leith Melange Wrap Dress – I’m a huge fan of simple dresses for summer, and this one looks perfect. I also feel like I could also dress it up with a blazer and riding boots to transition into fall – especially with the red grape color. My only concern is how low the neckline goes, but I could probably end up pinning it a little higher, or wearing some sort of bralette underneath to cover up.
Caslon Cotton Blend Boyfriend Blazer – This is my go to style of jacket. I have a great one from Lucky’s from last year, and my mom is constantly trying to steal it. I ended up getting her one in Black-Ivory Mal color
Nike Dry Element Long Sleeve Top – Even though I’m no longer in DC and Florida doesn’t get nearly as cold, I still couldn’t resist getting one of these long sleeve Nike tops. I’m a lover of all things Nike and I know that I’ll be able to get good use out of this shirt during Florida’s mild winter. Will I actually run in it? Probably not, but it will be great for running errands in (which is honestly what I use most of my athletic clothes for right now)
The North Face Crew Run Wind Anorak – I had an anorak throughout all of undergrad (#sororitylife) and one of my biggest regrets is that I got rid of mine when I graduated. These jackets are so functional and versatile. I’ve been looking for a replacement for a while, so I ordered this one to check it out. I’m hoping that it’s on the lighter end of heaviness since I do live in Florida, so I might end up returning it based on how it feels.
Zella Live In High Waist Leggings – I fell into the hype with this item. All of the bloggers I follow have been recommending these, so I figured there was no harm in checking out a pair. I went with the high waisted version because I feel more confident in that style. I have a (super) old pair of high waisted leggings that I really need to retire, so I’m hoping these will be a good replacement. I wear these under all of my long sweaters for fall/winter.
Chantelle Intimates Soft Stretch Seamless Hipster Panties – My mom found these panties last year and got me a pair for Christmas. They are AMAZING. Very soft, light, and no ridges from seams. I bought three more this year.
Nordstrom Lingerie ‘Moonlight’ Short Pajamas OR Nordstrom Lingerie Moonlight Pajamas – Who doesn’t love a nice PJ set! I got a pair in last year’s sale that still is in great condition, so I didn’t get a set this year. But these pajamas definitely are in my top five favorite sets!
Hunter Original Short Rain Boot – I LOVE these boots. I previously had a pair of the Hunter Tall Rain Boots, and I just struggled to walk in them. I always ended up with shin and knee pain from them hitting as I took a step. Two years ago, I invested in the short rain boots and ended up selling my tall pair. I just feel like the short pair is a lot easier to walk in, and I’m able to tuck business casual pants into them without wrinkling the material. Hunter rain boots are an investment that I definitely think is worth it (especially when they’re on sale like this).
Blondo Nova Waterproof Bootie OR Blondo Lanka Waterproof Bootie – I hate trying to go out on rainy days. Other than my Hunters or a few pairs of sandals, I have no shoes that are really able to survive the rain. When I saw these booties online, I immediately was so intrigued. I ordered a pair of the Nova in black, and I can’t wait to get them in the mail and see what they look like. I decided to go with the Nova because I felt like the heel was small enough I could wear them on a regular basis, and they were a little more “in style” than the Lanka.
Halogen Violet Mule – Mules are so in right now, and I’ve been looking for a pair for a while. I don’t like pointed toes, so I felt like these mules were a good compromise with the rounded front. I ordered a pair in black to check them out, but if I don’t absolutely love them, I’ll go ahead and return them. They’re not on sale enough for me to keep them unless they’re perfect.
Nordstrom Small Hoop Earrings – I’ve desperately been wanting a pair of hoops like this for a while now, but I just can’t afford to spend the money to get a high end pair. This pair will hold me over until then. I got the silver version
Nadri Medium Inside Out Hoop Earrings – I can’t remember the last time I had a pair of big hoop earrings (maybe middle school), but when I saw this pair I couldn’t resist getting them. I love the inside out quality of them, and I can’t wait to see what they look like in real life.
Halogen Curved Disc Stud Earrings – Can you tell I really like simple earrings? I would just rather have classic pieces than statement items, but I feel like these earrings are a good compromise between the two. I ended up not purchasing them since I had already gotten two pairs of earrings, but they were definitely a contender!
Nordstrom Ava Foldover Crossbody Bag OR Nordstrom Kara Leather Expandable Crossbody Bag – One of my favorite purses of all time is a Michael Kors bag that is very similar in style to these two. It’s black with a tassel and the top folds over very similarly. I get compliments on it every single time I go out, and it’s wonderful for how much fits in it (it’s a little larger than the Kara). When I saw the Ava foldover, I knew I absolutely had to have it. It’s smaller than my current bag but still a good size for day to day life. And I couldn’t argue with that price! I got it in the Burgundy London color and also got the black version to give to my mother for Christmas (she picked it out).
CATHY’S CONCEPTS Monogram Travel Kit – I’ve had a Vera Bradley hanging organizer for a couple years now, and it’s really starting to show its age. And I’ve decide that since I’m now a PA-C, I should try to look more mature. So, I ended up going to Vera Bradley and buying a plain black one. But when the Nordstrom Sale rolled around and I saw this bag, I decided I might as get it to try as well. I’m hoping that this one is able to fit a little more in the pouch since that’s my one complaint about the Vera Bradley version. I’ll end up returning one of them since I won’t need two.
CATHY’S CONCEPTS Monogram Passport Case & Luggage Tag – I’ve been looking for a passport cover for a while now, and this one definitely caught my eye with its accompanying luggage tag. I ended up not getting this one because I decided that I didn’t need it at this time. I have no international trips planned for the near future and I need to save my money for things I actually need.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Duo – Even though I have my eyebrows tattooed on, I still touch them up. Foundation has a tendency to cover them, and it’s easier to just run a little makeup over them to have them stand out again. I’ve been using the Brow Wiz for a while now, and I’m excited to try out the clear brow gel as well. I get the light brown color.
FOREO LUNA mini 2 + LUNA play Set – I have the Foreo Luna 2 and am absolutely OBSESSED with it. I love that its made of medical grade silicon and that I don’t have to buy replacement brushes for it. My skin has become a lot clearer and smoother since I started using it. I chose to go with the Luna over the Mini because I wanted the sensitive skin version. If I hadn’t already gotten mine, I would have absolutely bought this set. I really like that it comes with a Luna Play because that one is the perfect size to throw in a gym bag for cleansing after a workout.
Moroccanoil The Ultimate Hydration Collection – I recently made the switch to this conditioner and I’ve noticed a HUGE difference in my hair since then. I feel like it’s a lot softer and healthier. I’m still using a drug store shampoo, so when I saw this set I couldn’t resist buying! I felt like it was worth it even just for the conditioner (I have a smaller bottle and spent about half of the price of this set), and I’ll get to try out the shampoo as well!
Nordstrom at Home Hydrocotton Bath Towel – My mom and I religiously buy these towels every year. They’re super absorbent and oh so soft. Its like being wrapped up in a cloud when you get out of the shower.
Nordstrom at Home Kennebunk Bliss Plush Throw – I fell in LOVE with this blanket in April and ended up buying one for myself and another for my mom. It’s so incredibly soft, the colors are fantastic, and it’s light enough that I can use it year round in Florida. Personally, I felt like the normal price of $40 was a steal, so when I saw that this blanket was part of the Anniversary sale I jumped. I now am the proud owner of a teal gazer, grey frost, green clover, and burgundy andorra blanket. Can you tell I really like this blanket?
American Atelier Daphne Set of 4 Stemless Wine Glasses – My roommate in PA school had this set of wine glasses and I was OBSESSED with them. They were the perfect size to fit comfortably in my hands and I loved the look of them. I ordered a set in the gold, but I was incredibly tempted by the clear color as well.
I hope you enjoyed my picks for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! I would love to hear what you ended up picking in the sale. And I’ll be sure to do an update when I get my items in the mail to let all y’all know what I think! Thanks for allowing me to branch out into something not medicine related, and I hope you enjoyed it.
