I’ve seen some posts lately asking about what a day in the life of a PA student is like, so I thought I would post my typical day. Granted, mine is probably a lot different than most people’s, and it will vary by school, but it will give you a little insight.
6:00am Wake Up
Soooo this tends to depend on the week I have. If I have exams that week, I tend to wake up more like 4am. I get a lot more studying done in the morning and I feel more productive. I’m a morning person, and there happens to be some very loud construction right next door to my apartment that starts at 6:30 am.
I wake up, eat some cereal while browsing social media and try to force myself to get out of bed. Recently, I’ve been just insanely exhausted and not wanting to leave my oh so comfortable bed.
6:30-7:40 Study Time
Make lunch for the day (a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with apple slices – yes I am a child). Study or read over the lecture notes for that day. Talk to my cat and try to convince her not to meow at my roommate’s door (her day doesn’t start until later)
Depending on what day it is will determine the class. Normally, it’s Clinical Medicine, which is set up in “blocks”. This week is Neurology. We have an exam every 2 weeks. Class can be about anything from the pathology or physiology of a disease to going over a certain disease. It’s always PowerPoint slides, and normally about 100ish. We get a break at the hour mark (thank god) to stretch our feet and go to the bathroom
This class tends to be a rotating class depending on the day-anything from Human Behavior to PA roles. The nice thing is these classes are *slightly* less stressful. Still a lot of material that we have to know, and on the downside most of the classes only have 1 or 2 exams, so we REALLY have to know our stuff. Or, the class grade is based off of a final paper.
So I try to go outside for this, even if it’s only 10-15 minutes. I normally eat my lunch and then do some studying or take a quiz. Especially if it is an exam week, I study. If I feel like I can’t study any more, I tend to just talk to my classmates or maybe watch some Netflix.
Pharmacology, woo woo? I actually find this class super interesting, but HARD. There’s such minute differences between drugs and their effects. I also really struggle with pronunciation of a lot of the drugs. We have an exam ever 2.5-3 weeks. By the end of this class is when I start feeling pooped out.
Yep, still going. This tends to be another Clinical Medicine class. So another 100ish slides in 2 hours. Lots of information we have to know! Often times this will be a guest lecturer, which tends to be both exciting and stressful. They tend to be experts in their fields and know so much and are so enthusiastic about the subject. But, they don’t make the exam questions and sometimes it’s stressful trying to know what to study from their lecture.
5:00-5:30 Heading home
I head home, check social media, put on comfy clothes, and talk to my cat. I also grab a quick snack or eat dinner if I’m really hungry
I try to get in a quick recharge here before studying. As my roommate can attest to, I have to set like 5 alarms to wake up and sometimes (okay, maybe a lot) I end up taking a much longer nap. On thing PA school has made me super good at is falling asleep really quickly!
I either rewatch a lecture-sometimes it’s nice to be able to pause things as I am taking notes or rewind. Or I write down the objective questions and the answers to them. Or I make flashcards and studying those. Or I make “big picture” sheets of things I absolutely need to know.
7:45-9:15 Gym and Shower
I’ve realized the more I work out, the happier I feel and the better I do in school. So, I try to work about 4ish times a week. The days I don’t work out, my roommate and I tend to watch some TV and kick back for a little bit.
9:20-10:00 “Relaxed” studying
This tends to be more of me just rereading notes and passively studying. I kind of use it as an unwind time and try not to stress myself out with stuff I don’t know.
10:oo pm Bedtime
I’m a sleepy person and I like to go to bed early.
On the weekends, I try to study for the majority of the day or do my assignments for the next week that are due during the week. I also go grocery shopping and try to give myself time after like 7pm at night to just do “me” things. This could be cooking something yummy to eat during the week, watching TV, or going out with friends. A big struggle for me is how exhausted I get during the week, and my tendency to just want to sleep on the weekend. Hopefully, this gave you a little insight into a day in the life of PA school.
