My thoughts on this very cool, modern take on Balkan food in the heart of DC
So my friends were in town this past weekend from Wake Forest PA school, and one of the things on their list of things they wanted to do was go to Ambar. They have a special were you get unlimited small plates and drinks for $50 – which is an amazing price for anything in DC.
I’m not going to lie, at first I was just a little hesitant about eating there (I’m one of those annoyingly picky eaters and I like to eat at the same boring restaurants over and over). However, this experience was one for the books and somewhere I definitely want to go to again. The food was amazing – we tried most of the things on the menu and there was only one thing that we weren’t too crazy about. Even the food that sounds really out there was amazing. Additionally, the drink menu included in the unlimited special was pretty great (I hate when you go to a place and there unlimited drinks include like 2 drinks that are ehhh).
But perhaps my favorite part of going to this restaurant was the staff. Everyone was very happy and wanted to talk to the patrons. We spent most of the time we were there joking around with everyone from the hostess to the manager and chef to waiters. To me, that’s incredibly important. I want to go to a place that I feel welcomed (yes, good food is important, but so is good staff).
My favorite dishes were:
the grilled asparagus
I had the pomegranate collins for my drink(s).
My advice to you if you’re going to go? Make a reservation! And go with an appetite!
